Tenable Holdings Inc. has introduced a new OT asset discovery engine designed to help organizations gain immediate visibility into cyber-physical systems, including operational technology (OT), IoT devices, and shadow IT. The new capability, called VM-Native OT Discovery, integrates directly into the company’s Tenable One Exposure Management Platform, enabling security teams to assess and manage risk across IT and OT environments from a single interface.
The launch comes as organizations face increasing pressure to secure cyber-physical infrastructure, with analysts warning that attacks targeting these systems are expected to rise significantly in the coming years. As IT and OT environments converge, security teams are often challenged by limited visibility and complex deployment requirements when attempting to monitor these assets.
Tenable’s new solution addresses these challenges by eliminating the need for additional hardware, agents, or standalone tools. Instead, it allows organizations to deploy OT discovery instantly within their existing vulnerability management workflows, providing a streamlined approach to identifying and assessing risks across interconnected systems.
The growing importance of cyber-physical security is evident across industries, where assets such as industrial equipment, building management systems, and connected devices are increasingly integrated into enterprise networks. From manufacturing environments and data centers to office infrastructure like HVAC systems and access control devices, these assets represent an expanding attack surface that often lacks sufficient oversight.
According to Tenable, early adopters across sectors including finance, education, hospitality, and government have uncovered hundreds to thousands of previously unknown OT and IoT devices during initial deployments. Many of these assets were found to have critical vulnerabilities, underscoring the risks associated with limited visibility.
Eric Doerr, Chief Product Officer at Tenable, said the new capability is designed to remove barriers that have historically prevented organizations from addressing OT security effectively. He emphasized that integrating OT visibility into existing platforms allows organizations to quickly bring cyber-physical risks into scope without introducing additional complexity. By consolidating asset discovery and exposure data within a unified platform, Tenable aims to help organizations break down silos between IT and OT security. The solution also supports compliance efforts by enabling organizations to identify and monitor assets in line with evolving regulatory requirements.
The introduction of VM-Native OT Discovery reflects a broader shift in cybersecurity toward integrated exposure management, where organizations seek comprehensive visibility across all environments including cloud, identity, AI systems, and physical infrastructure to better manage risk in increasingly complex digital ecosystems.
