EE has officially rolled out a significantly upgraded version of its Scam Guard service, introducing a more advanced and comprehensive fraud protection solution tailored to combat the rapidly evolving threat landscape. With cyber scams becoming increasingly sophisticated, the telecom giant has enhanced its offering to provide stronger, AI-driven security features for its users.
Available to pay-monthly mobile customers for £2 per month on a flexible 30-day rolling plan, the upgraded Scam Guard builds upon its earlier version while integrating new layers of defense. Notably, it introduces AI Triple-Lock Protection, along with features such as Scam Assistant, Mobile Device Security, and Dark Web Monitoring. Together, these capabilities aim to offer customers greater confidence and protection in an increasingly digital world.
This launch comes at a crucial time. According to Cifas, over 444,000 fraud cases were recorded in the National Fraud Database in 2025. This marks the highest annual figure ever and reflects a 6% increase compared to 2024. Experts largely attribute this surge to cybercriminals leveraging artificial intelligence to create highly convincing phishing emails, fake websites, deepfake voice calls, and targeted SMS scams at scale.
Since introducing Scam Guard in 2024, EE has already demonstrated its effectiveness by blocking more than 169 million scam and spam attempts. Building on this success, the company now aims to double that figure over the next year with its upgraded system, signaling a strong commitment to customer safety.
The enhanced Scam Guard introduces AI Triple-Lock Protection, which operates through three continuous layers of defense. First, Safe Email proactively scans inboxes around the clock, identifying suspicious messages before users even open them. Additionally, Safe SMS uses advanced AI to detect fraudulent text messages in real time, ensuring users remain protected during everyday communication. Meanwhile, Safe Web shields users while browsing or shopping online by blocking potentially harmful websites before they can cause damage.
Furthermore, the Scam Assistant feature allows customers to upload screenshots of emails, messages, websites, or QR codes and instantly receive guidance on whether the content is safe. In parallel, Call Labelling automatically screens incoming calls at the network level, providing users with critical information before answering.
Beyond these tools, the service also includes Social Media Monitoring and Dark Web Monitoring, which track suspicious activities across a user’s digital footprint and alert them promptly. Mobile Device Security strengthens protection by blocking ransomware, viruses, and malicious attachments in real time. Additionally, a built-in Password Manager helps users create and manage strong passwords, addressing one of the most common vulnerabilities in online security.
BT Group continues to support these efforts through its broader cybersecurity initiatives. Over the past year (January to December 2025), the group has blocked 1.6 billion attempts to access malicious domains, stopped 200 million scam SMS messages, prevented 61 million scam calls, and flagged an additional 175 million nuisance or fraudulent calls.
The upgraded Scam Guard is now available for all EE pay-monthly customers as an optional add-on, reinforcing the company’s focus on enabling safer digital experiences.
