Smarsh has announced that it has initiated the FedRAMP authorization process, marking a significant step in its effort to help U.S. federal agencies securely capture and govern mobile communications at scale. With this move, the company aims to simplify the adoption of secure communication tools while meeting strict government compliance requirements.
As federal agencies face a growing surge in Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, the need for complete and auditable communication records has become more critical than ever. However, many agencies still struggle with fragmented visibility across mobile texts, messaging apps, and emerging digital platforms. Consequently, these gaps often delay response times and increase compliance risks.
To address these challenges, Smarsh provides a unified solution that captures communications across multiple channels. This enables agencies to respond more quickly to FOIA requests while maintaining transparency and reducing operational complexity. In addition, having a centralized and defensible record of communications strengthens internal investigations and enhances overall accountability.
By pursuing Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program authorization, Smarsh is working to eliminate common barriers in government technology adoption. Typically, agencies must conduct extensive and repetitive security assessments before deploying new solutions. However, FedRAMP certification standardizes these requirements, allowing faster procurement and deployment while ensuring high levels of data protection and compliance.
As a result, agencies will be able to adopt Smarsh solutions more efficiently without compromising on security standards. This is particularly important in highly regulated environments where maintaining data integrity and auditability is essential.
“Smarsh already supports a broad range of federal agencies, and initiating the FedRAMP authorization process is a natural next step in our continued commitment to this market,” said Lanika Mamac, General Manager, Public Sector Business, Smarsh. “Over the past year, we’ve further strengthened our security and data protection controls across our platform, including Smarsh Capture Mobile, which already meets the needs of highly regulated environments. Committing to FedRAMP authorization is about removing barriers streamlining procurement, reducing redundant security reviews, and making it easier for agencies to deploy trusted solutions that ensure complete, compliant mobile communications capture.”
To further strengthen its FedRAMP journey, Smarsh has partnered with Coalfire, a leading advisory firm specializing in compliance and risk management. Coalfire will provide guidance and assessment services throughout the authorization process, helping Smarsh meet the stringent requirements necessary for certification.
Notably, more than 70% of FedRAMP-authorized providers rely on Coalfire, underscoring the firm’s expertise in navigating complex compliance frameworks. Therefore, this partnership reinforces Smarsh’s commitment to delivering secure, government-grade solutions.
“Smarsh is making a meaningful investment in expanding secure, compliant innovation for the public sector,” said Karen Laughton, EVP of Compliance Advisory, Coalfire. “We’re proud to support their FedRAMP journey and help accelerate access to trusted, cloud-based communications governance solutions for federal agencies.”
Overall, this development highlights a broader trend toward strengthening digital governance in the public sector. As communication channels continue to evolve, agencies must adopt solutions that ensure visibility, compliance, and security while also meeting increasing demands for transparency and accountability.
