The collaboration also reinforces the mandate of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission in promoting data privacy, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder engagement within both public and private sectors.
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chartered Institute of Directors of Nigeria (CIoD) to strengthen collaboration on data protection awareness, compliance, and corporate governance across Nigeria’s business landscape. The agreement marks a strategic step toward embedding data privacy principles within leadership structures and improving organizational accountability.
The partnership aligns with NDPC’s broader roadmap focused on institutional cooperation and public-private partnerships (PPP) to advance data protection practices nationwide. By working closely with CIoD, the Commission aims to extend data protection awareness beyond regulatory frameworks and into boardrooms, ensuring that corporate leaders play an active role in safeguarding data and maintaining trust in the digital economy.
Dr Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner and CEO of NDPC, emphasized that collaboration with professional bodies is critical to driving compliance and strengthening Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem. He highlighted that data protection awareness must go beyond individual professionals to the organizations they represent, reinforcing credibility and trust across industries.
Dr Taiwo Alausa, Director-General of the Chartered Institute of Directors of Nigeria, welcomed the partnership and reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to promoting strong data governance practices among directors and executives. He noted that equipping corporate leaders with the right knowledge and frameworks is essential to ensuring responsible data management and regulatory adherence.
As part of the MoU, both organizations have established a joint implementation team responsible for developing actionable strategies and ensuring the immediate rollout of initiatives under the agreement. This structured approach is expected to accelerate the adoption of data protection standards and foster a culture of compliance within corporate Nigeria.
The collaboration further reinforces NDPC’s mandate to promote data privacy, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder engagement across both public and private sectors. By integrating data protection into corporate governance frameworks, the partnership is set to enhance accountability, reduce risks, and support sustainable digital transformation in Nigeria.
