Itron, a major provider of energy and water management solutions, has revealed that it recently experienced a cyberattack that allowed an unauthorized party to access parts of its internal IT systems. The breach was identified on April 13, 2026, prompting the company to immediately activate its cybersecurity response plan. Itron also brought in external experts to investigate the incident, contain the intrusion, and strengthen its defenses, while notifying law enforcement authorities as part of its response.
According to the company’s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the unauthorized activity has since been contained, and there have been no signs of continued malicious access. Despite the seriousness of the breach, Itron stated that its core business operations were not disrupted and that the incident is not expected to have a material impact on its financial performance. The company also noted that a significant portion of any costs related to the incident will likely be covered by insurance.
Headquartered in Washington, Itron plays a critical role in global infrastructure, supporting electricity grids, water distribution systems, and gas networks across more than 100 countries. With thousands of customers and millions of connected endpoints, its systems are deeply embedded in essential services. However, the company emphasized that, based on current findings, there is no evidence that customer systems or data were affected by the breach.
At this stage, the full scope and impact of the incident are still under investigation, and no ransomware group or threat actor has publicly claimed responsibility. While the situation appears contained for now, the event highlights ongoing risks facing organizations tied to critical infrastructure, where even limited system access can pose significant security concerns.
