In a significant move to strengthen maritime cybersecurity, Rakuten Symphony has actively launched its Rakuten Maritime cybersecurity platform by forming strategic partnerships with Cydome Security and Lattice. Through this expansion, the company aims to deliver end-to-end protection across both Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT), covering the entire vessel lifecycle—from initial design to full-scale operations.
Moreover, Rakuten Maritime is taking a proactive step to address long-standing cybersecurity gaps in the maritime sector. Traditionally, many cybersecurity frameworks have focused heavily on new ship builds and IT environments. However, a vast number of existing vessels and their OT systems—such as navigation controls and engine management—have remained underprotected. Recognizing this gap, Rakuten Maritime is now extending its security coverage to include both newly constructed ships and legacy fleets operating worldwide.
By collaborating with Cydome, the platform introduces advanced multi-layered cybersecurity protection. Not only does this partnership enable real-time threat detection, but it also allows fleet-wide risk management through a unified dashboard. As a result, maritime operators can achieve “zero-touch” deployment and faster implementation of cybersecurity measures across diverse fleets. Additionally, the solution ensures compliance with global regulations, including IACS UR E26/E27, IMO 2021, U.S. Coast Guard standards, and NIS2 directives, thereby enhancing trust and operational reliability.
At the same time, Rakuten Maritime is addressing another critical challenge—security vulnerabilities within ship design processes. Historically, unstructured data and outdated workflows in shipbuilding have created hidden cyber and operational risks. To overcome this, the partnership with Lattice introduces AI-powered automation into the design phase. By converting complex ship design data into structured digital assets, the platform minimizes errors and reduces operational downtime.
Furthermore, Lattice’s YardGrid system plays a vital role by organizing and indexing extensive technical documents generated during ship construction. This structured approach not only improves project efficiency but also enhances the overall quality of shipbuilding processes. Consequently, maritime organizations can achieve better decision-making and streamlined operations.
Ryan Son, Head of New Business Incubation at Rakuten Symphony and Head of Rakuten Maritime, said,
“These partnerships represent a major step toward transforming digital safety and operational efficiency in the maritime sector. With Cydome and Lattice, we can now address critical protection gaps for the entire vessel lifecycle, from design to operation, across all vessel types. This will accelerate Rakuten Maritime’s expansion into the global shipping market.”
Nir Ayalon, CEO of Cydome, added,
“Our partnership with Rakuten Maritime strengthens global maritime cybersecurity standards. By providing a fleet-wide cybersecurity digital backbone, Cydome extends a ‘secure-by-design’ framework across the entire vessel lifecycle, accommodating all existing and future needs. This collaboration is vital for the physical safety of crews and the digital resilience of the international supply chain, as well as compliance with new regulations being introduced in many regions.”
Sangwon Kang, CEO of Lattice, stated,
“Bringing YardGrid’s document management innovation to the global maritime market through Rakuten Maritime is crucial. Structuring the extensive technical documents required in shipbuilding is essential for competitiveness and a prerequisite for meaningful AI transformation. We aim to expand YardGrid’s expertise worldwide.”
Overall, this initiative highlights how Rakuten Maritime is not only strengthening cybersecurity resilience but also driving digital transformation in the maritime industry. By integrating AI-driven automation with robust cybersecurity frameworks, the company is positioning itself as a key player in securing the future of global shipping.
