GreyNoise Intelligence has introduced Project Swarm, a new collaborative research initiative aimed at strengthening visibility and defense across the internet’s network edge. The initiative transforms GreyNoise’s platform from a proprietary sensor network into a community-driven ecosystem, enabling partners to contribute data and capabilities to improve global threat intelligence. The move comes as cyberattacks increasingly target edge infrastructure such as firewalls, VPN gateways, and load balancers areas often difficult to monitor with traditional security tools.
Ash Devata said the project is built on the principle that collective intelligence is essential to counter increasingly sophisticated threats. He emphasized that deception-based telemetry where systems are designed to attract and observe attackers provides critical insights into real-world attack behavior.
Security experts warn that the threat landscape is shifting, with advanced attackers using low-volume, targeted techniques to compromise edge devices without triggering standard detection systems. At the same time, the gap between vulnerability disclosure and exploitation is shrinking, while patching delays leave systems exposed for extended periods. Project Swarm aims to address this gap by expanding both the scale and diversity of telemetry collected from edge environments worldwide. The initiative invites contributions from security researchers, academic institutions, non-profits, technology vendors, and internet service providers.
Participants can contribute in three primary ways by expanding IP coverage to increase geographic diversity, by adding device profiles that simulate high-value targets, and by enhancing detection capabilities through new rules and threat classifications. These contributions help improve the speed and accuracy of identifying attacker tactics and behaviors.
In return, contributors gain access to the data generated by their sensors, along with the ability to compare their findings against GreyNoise’s global intelligence baseline. This enables organizations to better understand threats specific to their environments while benefiting from broader industry insights. Project Swarm reflects a growing trend toward collaborative cybersecurity models, where shared intelligence plays a key role in defending against distributed and rapidly evolving threats. By opening its platform to the wider security community, GreyNoise aims to accelerate detection and improve resilience across critical internet-facing infrastructure.
