Grafana Labs has fixed a critical AI-related vulnerability that could have allowed attackers to silently extract sensitive user data from its observability platform. The issue, dubbed “GrafanaGhost,” highlights growing concerns around prompt injection attacks targeting AI-powered tools.

The vulnerability was discovered by researchers at Noma Security, who demonstrated how attackers could exploit Grafana’s AI components to leak confidential information. Grafana, widely used by enterprises to monitor infrastructure, operations, and business metrics, often sits at the center of highly sensitive data environments making such flaws particularly dangerous.

The attack relied on an indirect prompt injection technique. Threat actors could embed hidden malicious instructions within an attacker-controlled webpage, disguising them as harmless content. When Grafana’s AI assistant processed this content—often through something as simple as loading an image—it could unknowingly execute the malicious instructions and send sensitive data back to the attacker’s server.

Researchers found that the exploit leveraged weaknesses in how Grafana handled image rendering within its Markdown component. By bypassing certain security controls, attackers could trick the AI into interpreting external prompts as legitimate commands.

One of the most concerning aspects of the attack was its stealth. According to Noma Security, the malicious payload could be stored within systems and triggered during routine user interactions, such as viewing logs. This meant users could unknowingly activate the exploit without clicking suspicious links or taking explicit action.

Grafana Labs responded quickly after responsible disclosure, patching the issue and reinforcing its AI safeguards. The company stated there is no evidence that the vulnerability was exploited in real-world attacks or that any customer data was compromised.

However, there is some disagreement between Grafana and the researchers regarding the severity of the exploit. While Grafana maintains that user interaction was required, Noma argues the attack could operate with minimal visibility, making it highly dangerous in practice.

The incident underscores a broader industry challenge: as AI becomes deeply integrated into enterprise tools, new attack surfaces—like prompt injection—are emerging. Organizations are now being urged to strengthen AI security controls and remain vigilant against evolving threats targeting intelligent systems.
