Airbus has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Ultra Cyber Ltd from the Cobham Ultra group, a portfolio company of Advent, marking a significant expansion of its cybersecurity capabilities and reinforcing its position as a sovereign cyber partner in Europe. The acquisition strengthens Airbus’s role in delivering advanced cyber defense solutions while enhancing its footprint in the UK and across allied markets.
This strategic move aligns with the growing demand for secure, resilient digital infrastructure as governments and enterprises face increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. By integrating Ultra Cyber Ltd into its operations, Airbus is expanding its end-to-end cybersecurity portfolio, complementing its existing UK sovereign cyber capabilities based in Newport, Wales.
With more than 200 employees, primarily located at Ultra Cyber’s advanced cyber centre of excellence in Maidenhead, the acquisition highlights Airbus’ continued investment in the UK as a core operational hub. The integration will form part of Airbus Defence and Space’s Connected Intelligence business unit, contributing to the development of a scaled UK sovereign cyber capability designed to support national and allied security priorities.
The move is also a key component of Airbus’s broader strategy to become a leading multi-sovereign cybersecurity provider in Europe. As geopolitical tensions and cyber warfare risks continue to rise, Airbus aims to contribute to the development of a “European digital shield,” ensuring that nations across Europe, as well as NATO and Five Eyes partners, have access to trusted, government-endorsed cyber technologies.
This acquisition builds on Airbus’s earlier purchase of Infodas in 2024, which strengthened its cybersecurity presence in Germany and the wider European Union, particularly in cross-domain security solutions. Today, Airbus operates a pan-European cyber network with teams across the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Finland, positioning itself as a key player in regional cyber defense innovation.
In addition to enhancing cybersecurity services, the acquisition brings specialized airborne datalink capabilities that complement Airbus’ military aircraft portfolio. This integration enables secure communication and data protection across both ground-based and airborne systems, supporting defense operations that require high levels of data integrity and resilience.
Mike Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, noting that it reinforces Airbus’ long-term commitment to the UK and strengthens its partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence. He highlighted the company’s focus on building resilient, sovereign cyber infrastructure capable of addressing evolving threats.
Shonnel Malani, Managing Partner at Advent and Chair of Ultra Electronics, stated that investments in Ultra Cyber have played a crucial role in supporting national security and protecting allied systems during a period of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
Juliette Wilcox, President of Ultra I&C UK Cyber, stated that the collaboration will expedite innovation, broaden R&D capabilities, and improve the delivery of sophisticated cybersecurity solutions both domestically and abroad.
As cyber threats continue to evolve, Airbus’ acquisition of Ultra Cyber Ltd underscores the importance of integrated, sovereign cybersecurity strategies. By combining expertise, advanced technologies, and regional capabilities, Airbus is positioning itself to play a leading role in shaping the future of secure digital defense across Europe and beyond.
