Tenable has introduced a new operational technology (OT) asset discovery engine designed to strengthen its exposure management platform and provide organizations with a unified view of cyber risk. With this launch, the company aims to bridge the long-standing gap between IT and cyber-physical environments, which many security teams still struggle to manage effectively.

The newly launched tool integrates directly into existing Tenable products, including Tenable One, Tenable Vulnerability Management, and Tenable Security Center. As a result, customers can begin discovering assets immediately without deploying additional hardware, installing new agents, or purchasing add-ons. This streamlined approach significantly reduces deployment complexity while accelerating visibility.

Moreover, the engine identifies operational technology, internet-connected devices, and shadow IT assets across environments. This capability becomes increasingly important as modern workplaces expand beyond traditional IT infrastructure. Today, cyber-physical systems include everything from HVAC systems and printers to badge readers, all of which contribute to a rapidly growing attack surface.

To address this challenge, Tenable positions its solution as a faster way to uncover assets that often remain outside conventional vulnerability management programs. In fact, during early-access deployments across industries such as hospitality, financial services, education, food and beverage, and government, organizations discovered a substantial number of previously unknown assets. Most users identified anywhere between 100 and over 1,000 unique OT and IoT devices shortly after implementation. Notably, several of these assets contained critical vulnerabilities, highlighting the urgency of improved visibility.

Expanding Cybersecurity Scope

At the same time, the launch reflects a broader shift within cybersecurity leadership. Increasingly, chief information security officers (CISOs) and central security teams are taking responsibility for OT environments. Industry insights reveal that more than half of CISOs now oversee OT security, while 45% of modern OT breaches originate from IT environments. Consequently, the overlap between IT and OT systems continues to grow, making unified visibility essential.

Traditionally, organizations relied on specialized sensors, dedicated hardware, or separate software deployments to monitor OT environments. However, these methods often delayed implementation and introduced operational risks. By embedding discovery capabilities into existing platforms, Tenable eliminates these barriers and enables organizations to act faster.

Additionally, the system provides detailed insights into assets, including vendor information, model specifications, firmware versions, backplane configurations, and operational status. This granular visibility allows security teams to assess risks more accurately and prioritize remediation efforts.

Compliance and Risk Management Benefits

Beyond visibility, Tenable emphasizes the growing importance of regulatory compliance. As cyber-physical systems face increasing scrutiny, organizations must demonstrate a clear understanding of their asset inventory and associated risks. Therefore, the new engine supports compliance initiatives by simplifying asset discovery and improving reporting accuracy.

Furthermore, many organizations still treat OT as a blind spot due to fragmented tools and divided ownership between IT, facilities, and operations teams. Tenable addresses this issue by unifying data within a single platform, enabling better collaboration and faster decision-making.

The launch also aligns with Tenable’s broader exposure management strategy, which consolidates risk data from IT, cloud, AI, and identity systems. By including OT within this framework, organizations gain a more comprehensive and connected view of their security posture.

“Cyber-physical risk can’t remain a blind spot in exposure management. We’re giving organisations an immediate, low-friction way to bring OT into scope, so they can gain visibility, meet compliance requirements and start reducing risk from day one, without adding new infrastructure,” said Eric Doerr, chief product officer at Tenable.

In addition, Tenable continues to support organizations with advanced requirements through its dedicated OT solution.

“For existing customers with more complex use cases, we offer Tenable OT Security, a comprehensive OT solution that delivers visibility, security and control for proactive risk reduction across today’s rapidly converging OT/IT environment,” Doerr said.

Industry Impact

Ultimately, this launch intensifies competition among cybersecurity vendors aiming to expand beyond traditional IT asset management. As industrial and cyber-physical environments become central to enterprise operations, organizations increasingly prioritize asset discovery and monitoring at the board level. Tenable’s latest innovation positions it strongly within this evolving landscape.
