NCSC Launches SilentGlass To Secure Monitor Connections

As cyber threats increasingly target overlooked hardware layers, the SilentGlass device unveiled by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) highlights a new approach to protecting display infrastructure from attack. SilentGlass is a plug and play security device designed to protect video connections between systems and monitors. The technology actively blocks unexpected or malicious signals transmitted through HDMI or DisplayPort interfaces, addressing a growing concern that display hardware can serve as an entry point for cyber intrusions.

The SilentGlass device has already been deployed across government environments and is now being made commercially available. The NCSC has partnered with Goldilock Labs and Sony UK to manufacture and distribute the product globally, signaling a broader push to commercialize government developed cybersecurity innovations.

The agency has warned that monitors represent an often overlooked attack surface. Because they handle sensitive data and are physically connected to critical systems, attackers can potentially exploit display interfaces to infiltrate networks, disrupt operations, or extract valuable information. SilentGlass is designed to close this gap by acting as a hardware level security barrier.

“Display screens and monitors are everywhere in modern business environments, and the SilentGlass device will help protect previously vulnerable IT infrastructure with unprecedented ease,” said Ollie Whitehouse, Chief Technology Officer at the NCSC. “Its development and commercialization shows the impact that the NCSC can have, alongside industry partners, with an affordable and effective product now globally available.”

Stephen Kines, co founder of Goldilock Labs, emphasized the significance of securing hardware interfaces that have historically been overlooked in cybersecurity strategies. “SilentGlass addresses a gap that has been widely overlooked. The hardware interfaces people rely on every day have rarely been treated as security boundaries, despite being exposed to risk through supply chains, third party servicing, and direct physical access,” he said.

The SilentGlass device is approved for use in high threat environments, including critical national infrastructure and government systems. Its plug and play design enables rapid deployment without requiring major changes to existing IT setups, making it accessible to a wide range of organizations seeking to enhance physical and hardware level security.

The launch also reflects a broader trend toward securing non traditional attack surfaces as cyber threats evolve. With increasing reliance on interconnected devices and complex supply chains, organizations are being forced to rethink how hardware components contribute to overall security posture.

The SilentGlass device demonstrates how targeted innovation can address specific vulnerabilities within enterprise environments. By focusing on display connections, the NCSC is expanding the cybersecurity perimeter beyond software and networks to include physical interfaces that have long been considered low risk.

As governments and enterprises face more sophisticated threats, the SilentGlass device represents a practical step toward strengthening infrastructure resilience. Its expected global adoption underscores the growing recognition that comprehensive cybersecurity must extend to every layer of the technology stack.
