eSentire has announced the appointment of James C. Foster as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership transition as the company continues to scale its AI-powered Managed Detection and Response (MDR) capabilities. Foster succeeds Kerry Bailey, who is retiring after successfully guiding the company through a sustained period of growth and innovation. As cyber threats become more advanced and persistent, eSentire is strategically positioning itself to meet these challenges with strong leadership and cutting-edge technology.
Foster brings more than two decades of experience in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and company building. Most notably, he founded ZeroFox and served as its Chairman and CEO, where he led the company to a successful public listing. During his tenure, ZeroFox achieved over 30 consecutive quarters of annual recurring revenue growth, expanded its global footprint across four continents, and completed multiple strategic acquisitions. As a result, the company evolved into a major global cybersecurity platform serving thousands of organizations.
Earlier in his career, Foster also founded Ciphent, which quickly became one of the fastest-growing cybersecurity firms in the United States. The company served more than 1,000 enterprise clients, including 43 Fortune 100 organizations, before merging with Accuvant. He later contributed to scaling Accuvant during a critical growth phase, helping the business approach $500 million in annual revenue. Additionally, Foster has held leadership and advisory roles at NightDragon and contributed to the growth of companies such as Guardent, Foundstone, and IronCircle. His career also includes service supporting U.S. national security initiatives at the Department of Defense.
“eSentire has built something truly exceptional a 25-year track record of growth and protecting many of the world’s most targeted organizations, a world-class team of threat hunters and security analysts, and an AI-powered platform in Atlas that is unmatched in the MDR space,” said Foster. “The threat landscape is evolving faster than ever, and organizations need a cybersecurity partner who can meet that pace with both agentic and human expertise. I am honored to work alongside this outstanding team and ensure that eSentire is delivering on our mission: hunting, investigating, and stopping cyber threats before they become business-disrupting events.”
Founded in 2001, eSentire currently protects over 2,000 organizations across more than 80 countries and 35 industries. Its Atlas XDR Cloud Platform combines multi-agent AI, continuous threat hunting, and expert-led security operations to deliver scalable, outcome-driven protection. Therefore, under Foster’s leadership, the company is expected to further enhance its capabilities in proactive, intelligence-led cybersecurity operations.
“It has been an incredible privilege to lead eSentire through a period of tremendous growth, and I could not be more confident in the future of this company,” said Bailey. “Foster brings exceptional vision, deep industry expertise, and a proven track record of building world-class security organizations. eSentire has never been better positioned with the team, the technology, and the mission to redefine what Managed Detection and Response means for organizations around the world. I have every confidence that under Foster’s leadership, eSentire will continue to raise the bar for our customers, our partners, and the industry as a whole. I’m proud of what we have built together, and I’m excited to watch what comes next.”
Leadership and board members also emphasized the strategic importance of this transition. John Becker highlighted Foster’s ability to guide the company through a rapidly evolving market driven by AI and proactive security models. Similarly, Lauren Zletz noted that Foster’s experience scaling category-defining cybersecurity platforms will accelerate innovation and strengthen eSentire’s global position.
Looking ahead, eSentire aims to build on its strong foundation by expanding its AI-driven MDR capabilities and delivering measurable security outcomes at scale. With Foster at the helm, the company is well-positioned to lead the next phase of cybersecurity evolution, where intelligence, automation, and human expertise must work together seamlessly to combat increasingly sophisticated threats.
