EnterpriseDB (EDB) has announced the community release of CloudNativePG 1.29, marking a significant milestone for one of the fastest-growing open-source PostgreSQL operators designed for Kubernetes environments. At the same time, the company previewed an exclusive enterprise-grade Kubernetes-native data protection solution during KubeCon Europe in Amsterdam.

To begin with, these developments reinforce EDB’s broader vision of enabling organizations to build sovereign AI and data infrastructures. By offering a cloud-neutral and portable foundation across hybrid and multi-cloud environments, EDB helps enterprises reduce dependency on hyperscalers while maintaining control over their data.

Moreover, as AI adoption accelerates and Kubernetes becomes the standard for production workloads, organizations increasingly require flexible and secure database solutions. According to industry insights, over 80% of enterprises now run Kubernetes in production, with databases forming the backbone of these environments. Therefore, CloudNativePG 1.29 introduces new capabilities designed to meet these evolving demands.

Highlighting this transformation, Gabriele Bartolini, VP and Chief Architect of Kubernetes at EnterpriseDB, stated:

“Over 80% of organizations now run Kubernetes in production—with databases as the primary workload and AI/ML adoption accelerating fast. This shift is redefining how PostgreSQL must operate: not as a static database, but as a portable, cloud-native foundation for sovereign AI.”

In addition, the latest version introduces modular extensions and enhanced supply chain security. Instead of relying on monolithic database builds, users can now dynamically install only the extensions they need, such as AI-powered vector search. Consequently, this approach reduces operational complexity while improving flexibility and security across deployments.

Bartolini further explained:

“By embedding the intelligence of a DBA as an operational brain within Kubernetes, you remove the Operational Wall of the hyperscalers, creating a DBaaS that is automated enough for developers but sovereign enough for the enterprise.”

Furthermore, EDB previewed a next-generation data protection solution tailored for Kubernetes-native environments. Unlike traditional backup tools, this solution delivers Zero Data Loss (RPO=0) through native Write-Ahead Logging (WAL) streaming. It also offers centralized management, rapid global disaster recovery, and end-to-end encryption aligned with FIPS 140-3 security standards.

Importantly, both open-source and enterprise features follow a zero-trust model. Each component is delivered as a verified and immutable artifact, ensuring production environments match tested configurations. This approach also supports compliance with regulations such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), including Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) and verified component provenance.

As a result, organizations can achieve greater transparency, security, and compliance while maintaining operational efficiency. Additionally, EDB’s innovations help enterprises reduce unpredictable cloud costs and gain consistent performance across environments.

Ultimately, with CloudNativePG 1.29 and its enterprise-grade enhancements, EDB continues to strengthen its leadership in the PostgreSQL ecosystem. By combining open-source innovation with enterprise-ready solutions, the company empowers organizations to build scalable, secure, and sovereign data platforms in the age of AI.
