Guardsquare is set to present at the NAB Show Las Vegas on Monday, April 20, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, where it will address a growing concern in the streaming industry mobile apps becoming a primary attack surface for piracy. During a session titled “When Your Streaming App Is the Attack Surface: Stopping Piracy at the Source,” the company will highlight how cybercriminals are shifting their focus from traditional content delivery channels to client-side applications.

As streaming platforms continue to invest heavily in digital rights management (DRM), watermarking, and backend protections, attackers are adapting their strategies. Instead of directly targeting video streams, they are increasingly exploiting vulnerabilities within mobile applications. Consequently, piracy and revenue abuse persist despite significant investments in securing content distribution systems.

To execute these attacks, threat actors use several advanced techniques. For instance, they often distribute repackaged versions of legitimate apps, modify playback logic, or harvest user credentials. In addition, they exploit APIs directly to gain unauthorized access to premium content. As a result, attackers can bypass traditional protections without ever interacting with the protected video stream itself.

During the session, Amanda Sutliff, Director of Product Marketing at Guardsquare, will explain how these client-side manipulations enable attackers to circumvent security controls. Furthermore, she will outline practical strategies for media and streaming providers to strengthen their defenses. These include implementing robust app integrity protections, detecting runtime tampering, and validating user trust before granting access to content.

“Streaming providers have invested heavily in protecting the stream, but attackers increasingly exploit the mobile app itself,” said Sutliff. “By protecting app integrity and detecting tampering at runtime, streaming platforms can stop piracy earlier in the attack chain while preserving the viewer experience.”

Ultimately, this session will emphasize the need for a shift in security focus. As attackers continue to evolve, streaming platforms must extend their protection strategies beyond backend systems and into the mobile applications that serve as the front line of user interaction.
