Palo Alto Networks To Acquire Portkey for AI Agent Security

As enterprises scale the use of autonomous systems, securing AI agents is becoming a defining challenge for the cybersecurity industry. Palo Alto Networks has announced its intent to acquire Portkey to strengthen its capabilities in securing agentic AI environments. Palo Alto Networks to acquire Portkey reflects a strategic move to address the growing security gap created by the rapid adoption of autonomous AI agents across enterprise systems.

Portkey is known for its AI Gateway technology, which provides a centralized control plane to manage and secure AI driven interactions. The platform already processes trillions of tokens each month while maintaining low latency, a critical requirement for real time agent to agent communication. By integrating Portkey into its Prisma AIRS platform, Palo Alto Networks aims to establish a unified system that can monitor, route, and protect every AI transaction across enterprise environments.

As organizations move beyond copilots and AI applications toward fully autonomous agents, the risks associated with these systems are increasing. These agents often operate with elevated privileges and can execute automated decisions across multiple internal and external systems, effectively creating a new attack surface. Palo Alto Networks to acquire Portkey is intended to help enterprises gain visibility and enforce governance without slowing innovation.

“As autonomous agents join the enterprise workforce, they also become a new, unmanaged attack surface. By integrating Portkey into Prisma AIRS, organizations will be able to confidently deploy and govern AI agents. With Portkey, we are providing enterprises with visibility into all their agentic traffic, and enabling them to control and protect against agentic threats,” said Lee Klarich, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Palo Alto Networks.

The integration will position Portkey as the AI Gateway within Prisma AIRS, enabling several key capabilities. These include securing AI interactions through runtime inspection and policy enforcement, ensuring high availability for mission critical workloads with automated failover mechanisms, and delivering centralized governance across AI models, agents, and tools. The platform will also support cost optimization through caching and usage controls while providing access to thousands of large language models through a single interface.

“Scaling AI in production requires a delicate balance between total flexibility for developers and absolute control for security teams. By joining Palo Alto Networks, we will establish the AI Gateway as the foundational layer of the secure AI enterprise. Together, we will provide the infrastructure that allows every organization to deploy autonomous agents with the confidence that their data and operations are fully protected,” said Rohit Agarwal, CEO and co founder of Portkey.

Following the completion of the transaction, expected in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, Palo Alto Networks will continue to support existing Portkey customers while expanding integration within its broader AI security platform. Palo Alto Networks to acquire Portkey signals a broader industry shift toward centralized governance models that can balance innovation with security as AI adoption accelerates.
