Company’s monitoring system recorded more than 71,000 attack attempts against public IP address in 24 hours.
Spitfire Network Services has launched a live honeypot cyberattack tracker, offering real-time visibility into the scale and intensity of automated cyber threats targeting publicly exposed IP addresses. The initiative aims to highlight how frequently organizations are being probed by malicious actors across the internet.
According to the company, its monitoring system recorded more than 71,000 attack attempts against a single public IP address within just 24 hours. The data reveals a relentless pace of activity, averaging 1,978 attacks per hour and approximately 27 attacks every minute, underscoring the persistent nature of modern cyber threats.
The honeypot system – designed to attract and monitor malicious activity – is intentionally exposed to the internet and accessible globally. It captures attack attempts and categorizes them by geographic origin, although Spitfire notes that attackers often use temporary virtual machines and other techniques to mask their true locations.
Harry Bowlby, Managing Director at Spitfire Network Services, stated that the tracker was initially developed for internal use before being made publicly available to raise awareness. He emphasized that the sheer volume of attacks demonstrates how any organization with a public-facing IP address is continuously targeted by automated tools scanning for vulnerabilities.
Bowlby warned that the risks associated with such exposure can be severe. He explained that once attackers gain access to a single device within a network, they can use it as a foothold to infiltrate additional systems. In many cases, attackers may remain undetected for extended periods before launching more damaging operations.
He further highlighted the potential consequences of these breaches, noting that cyberattacks – particularly ransomware incidents – can disrupt business operations, lead to significant financial losses, and require extensive efforts to recover compromised data and restore IT systems. The financial burden may also increase if organizations choose to pay ransom demands.
With the launch of this live tracker, Spitfire Network Services is aiming to provide organizations and business leaders with a clearer understanding of the constant threat landscape, reinforcing the need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect internet-facing infrastructure.
