Security researchers from Palo Alto Networks have revealed a critical security concern involving AI agents built on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform, showing how they could be manipulated into acting as “double agents” within enterprise environments.
The research demonstrates that attackers could exploit overly permissive default configurations to compromise AI agents and use them as entry points for deeper attacks. Once compromised, these agents could enable data exfiltration, remote code execution, and even the creation of persistent backdoors.
At the center of the issue is the Per-Project, Per-Product Service Agent, which researchers found to have excessive permissions by default. By gaining access to these credentials, attackers could move beyond the AI agent’s execution environment and into the broader cloud infrastructure, including sensitive data storage and project resources.
This effectively transforms AI agents from productivity tools into insider threats. With elevated access, attackers could retrieve sensitive data from Cloud Storage, access Artifact Registry repositories, and even interact with private container images. Such access could expose intellectual property and provide attackers with insights into system architecture for further exploitation.
Researchers also highlighted the potential for attackers to manipulate files and inject malicious code, leading to remote code execution and the establishment of long-term persistence within compromised environments.
In response to the findings, Google has updated its security guidance and recommended adopting a Bring Your Own Service Account (BYOSA) approach. This model enforces the principle of least privilege, ensuring that AI agents operate with only the permissions necessary for their intended tasks.
Google also emphasized that existing safeguards prevent service agents from modifying production container images, reducing the risk of widespread infrastructure compromise.
The discovery underscores a growing challenge in cloud and AI security: as organizations adopt advanced AI tools, misconfigurations and excessive permissions can introduce new attack surfaces. Experts warn that without proper controls, AI agents could become powerful tools for attackers rather than defenders.
Organizations using AI-driven cloud services are advised to review permissions, implement strict access controls, and continuously monitor for unusual activity to mitigate emerging risks.
