As organizations scale cloud adoption and AI driven data workflows, controlling access to sensitive information has become a critical priority in the cybertech ecosystem. Virtru has announced a new integration that introduces object level governance capabilities to Cloudflare R2 cloud storage.

The Virtru Cloudflare R2 integration enables organizations to enforce granular, cryptographic access controls on individual data objects rather than entire storage buckets. This shift allows enterprises to store, analyze, and connect AI tools to sensitive data while maintaining strict control over who can access specific files, regardless of location or application.

Traditionally, S3 compatible storage systems such as Cloudflare R2 manage access at the bucket level, meaning users with access permissions can view all data within that bucket. To work around this limitation, organizations have often created multiple buckets based on data sensitivity, department, or regulatory requirements. While effective, this approach increases complexity, operational costs, and the risk of governance gaps.

Virtru’s platform addresses this challenge by applying Trusted Data Format encryption and attribute based access control directly to each object. This allows a single storage bucket to contain files with different security policies, each enforced independently by the data itself. For example, finance, engineering, and compliance teams can access the same repository, but only view the files they are authorized to open.

“Securing data at rest has never been a hard problem,” said John Ackerly, CEO and Co Founder of Virtru. “The hard problem is governing what happens to sensitive data once it’s put to work searched, analyzed, queried, or accessed by AI tools and automated workflows. Data owners shouldn’t have to choose between the operational and economic benefits of modern cloud storage and the ability to govern their most sensitive data. Now, with the Virtru Data Security Platform and Cloudflare R2, they no longer have to.”

The integration enables real time policy enforcement, where every data access request is evaluated against user attributes before granting permission. This ensures continuous governance even as data is actively used across applications, workflows, and AI systems. Additionally, organizations can revoke access at any time and maintain detailed audit logs for compliance and monitoring.

Cloudflare R2’s zero egress fee model further enhances the value of this approach by eliminating data transfer costs during retrieval, making real time policy enforcement more practical at scale. While Cloudflare secures infrastructure through encryption, network protection, and global distribution, Virtru secures the data layer itself with persistent, cryptographically enforced controls.

The Virtru Cloudflare R2 integration reflects a broader shift toward data centric security, where protection and governance are embedded directly into the data rather than relying solely on infrastructure controls. As enterprises increasingly rely on cloud storage and AI driven analytics, solutions that provide granular, portable, and enforceable data governance will be essential for maintaining security, compliance, and operational efficiency.
