Netwrix Expands 1Secure To Govern AI Data Access

Netwrix has announced new enhancements to its 1Secure platform, introducing capabilities designed to give enterprises greater visibility and control over how AI agents and assistants access sensitive data. The update comes as organizations rapidly adopt tools like Microsoft Copilot, raising concerns about how AI interacts with existing identity permissions.

As AI systems increasingly operate within enterprise environments, they rely on the same identity structures as human users. This creates a growing risk: if permissions are excessive or misconfigured, AI agents can quickly surface sensitive or regulated data across systems.

Grady Summers, CEO of Netwrix, highlighted the underlying issue. “AI agents are not bypassing security controls. They are using the permissions that already exist,” he said. “If organizations don’t understand what those identities can access, they can’t control what AI can expose.”

To address this challenge, Netwrix has expanded its platform to unify identity governance, data discovery, and monitoring. The goal is to provide security teams with a clearer, more comprehensive understanding of how both human and non-human identities interact with critical data across hybrid environments.

One of the key updates is enhanced visibility through Netwrix Access Analyzer. The tool now enables organizations to identify excessive permissions, hidden access paths, and risky identity relationships that could expose sensitive data. By mapping how identities connect to data, security teams can proactively reduce exposure before AI tools are deployed or expanded.

The platform also strengthens data discovery and classification capabilities. Organizations can now locate sensitive and regulated data across collaboration platforms, cloud environments, and on-premises systems. This allows teams to understand which datasets may be accessible to AI assistants or shadow AI tools and apply appropriate protection policies.

Another major focus of the update is governance for machine identities and AI-driven workflows. AI agents often authenticate using service accounts, certificates, or tokens, creating complex and sometimes hidden access paths. Netwrix introduces new monitoring capabilities to detect anomalous behavior from these automated identities, including suspicious certificate activity and unusual service account usage.

A machine-learning-powered dashboard provides centralized visibility into service account behavior, helping security teams identify misconfigurations, excessive privileges, and potential threats. Automated response workflows can also be triggered to contain risks before they escalate.

In addition, Netwrix has expanded monitoring and compliance features through its Auditor solution, now available as a SaaS offering within the 1Secure platform. This includes tracking AI-driven activity, such as interactions with Microsoft Copilot, and generating audit trails to support regulatory compliance.

Organizations can also conduct Copilot readiness assessments to evaluate identity permissions and identify potential data exposure risks before deploying AI assistants. Integration with Netwrix Endpoint Protector extends governance to data in motion, enabling teams to monitor and control how sensitive information is shared during AI interactions.

Jeff Warren, Chief Product Officer at Netwrix, emphasized the importance of a unified approach. He noted that many organizations rely on disconnected tools for identity, data classification, and monitoring, making it difficult to manage AI-related risks effectively.

The latest updates reflect a broader shift in cybersecurity strategy as AI adoption accelerates. By linking identity permissions with data visibility and monitoring, Netwrix aims to help organizations proactively manage AI-driven risk ensuring that sensitive data remains protected even as AI becomes deeply embedded in enterprise workflows.
