Northeast Spine and Sports Medicine has disclosed a cyberattack that may have exposed the personal information of nearly 7,000 patients, highlighting growing concerns around data security in healthcare organizations. The Point Pleasant-based provider identified the incident after discovering unauthorized access to its systems earlier this year.
According to the company, the breach was detected on January 8, 2024, when it became aware that an unauthorized party had potentially accessed certain patient data. An internal investigation was initiated to assess the scope and nature of the incident, as well as to determine which individuals may have been impacted.
The compromised information may include sensitive personal and medical details such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and specific medical or billing information. Northeast Spine and Sports Medicine noted that not all affected individuals had the same type or extent of data exposed.
While the full impact of the breach is still being evaluated, incidents of this nature underscore the increasing risks faced by healthcare providers, where large volumes of sensitive patient data are stored and managed digitally. Cybercriminals often target such organizations due to the high value of medical and identity-related information.
Northeast Spine and Sports Medicine has stated that it is taking appropriate steps in response to the incident, including reviewing its security measures and notifying potentially affected individuals. The organization is also expected to provide guidance on protective actions patients can take, such as monitoring financial accounts and credit reports for unusual activity.
The breach adds to a growing list of cybersecurity incidents impacting the healthcare sector, reinforcing the need for stronger safeguards, continuous monitoring, and rapid incident response strategies to protect patient data and maintain trust.
