Niagara Networks, the Silicon Valley innovator behind the award-winning Open Visibility Platform (OVP), has introduced a new Mobile Visibility feature integrated into its virtualized Network Packet Broker (vNPB). This addition enables mobile operators to manage rapidly increasing subscriber traffic while enhancing security, performance, and overall user experience through subscriber-aware analytics.

Mobile network operators (MNOs) face significant hurdles, including surging data traffic, an array of specialized monitoring and security tools, and increasingly diverse infrastructures such as Open RAN deployments. Traditional visibility solutions often fall short in providing complete, subscriber-level traffic insights, leaving security and monitoring systems with fragmented or inaccurate information.

Niagara Networks addresses these challenges by embedding subscriber correlation capabilities directly into its virtualized network packet broker. The solution allows operators to deploy in virtualized mobile environments while correlating control-plane (GTP-C) and user-plane (GTP-U) traffic in real time. This ensures that every subscriber session is accurately monitored, including those involving roaming, VoLTE, or mobility events.

“Integrating our mobile visibility solution enables our virtual packet broker to fully correlate control and user plane traffic in real time,” stated Andre Vink, Vice President of Products at Niagara Networks. “This ensures that subscriber sessions remain tracked through mobility changes, roaming scenarios, and VoLTE calls, providing performance and security tools with a complete, coherent view of network traffic.”

Subscriber-aware visibility is crucial for accurate mobile network security and performance monitoring. Without it, data received by monitoring tools can be incomplete or misleading. Niagara Networks’ Mobile Visibility solution allows operators to:

  • Deliver fully correlated subscriber-level traffic to monitoring, security, and performance systems.
  • Load balance and filter traffic intelligently across multiple tools using subscriber-specific criteria.
  • Reduce operational costs by preventing tool overload and maintaining data consistency.

At the core of this offering is Niagara Networks’ virtualized Network Packet Broker (vNPB), a flexible microservices platform designed for advanced packet processing and network intelligence. Beyond subscriber correlation, the vNPB supports application filtering, header and payload slicing, data masking, NetFlow/IPFIX metadata generation, tunnel termination (ERSPAN, GRE, NVGRE, VXLAN, GENEVE), selective TLS decryption, deduplication, and regex-based filtering for sophisticated packet conditioning.

With the new Mobile Visibility capabilities, service providers and operators gain a comprehensive view of subscriber activity, enabling smarter network monitoring and security strategies that keep pace with evolving 4G, 5G, IoT, and future mobile technologies.
