Microsoft has announced a new AI-driven troubleshooting capability for Microsoft Purview Data Lifecycle Management (DLM), designed to simplify the identification and resolution of policy-related issues across Microsoft 365 environments. The feature is delivered through an open-source project called the DLM Diagnostics Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server, enabling AI assistants to securely analyze DLM configurations using read-only PowerShell diagnostics.
Microsoft Purview DLM plays a vital role in enforcing data governance, compliance, and retention policies across services like Exchange Online, SharePoint, and OneDrive. However, diagnosing issues within these environments has traditionally been complex, often requiring deep expertise in PowerShell, backend systems, and policy configurations. The MCP Server addresses this challenge by integrating AI into the troubleshooting workflow. It collects diagnostic data via PowerShell and uses AI models to interpret the information, providing actionable insights without requiring manual log analysis.
The AI-powered system can detect and analyze several common issues, including:
-
Retention policies not being applied correctly
-
Archive mailboxes failing to expand as expected
-
Inactive mailboxes not being deleted per policy
These issues are particularly critical for organizations that must comply with strict regulatory requirements around data retention and disposal.
A major highlight of this release is its read-only diagnostic approach, which ensures that AI-driven analysis does not introduce risks to live environments. By limiting access to diagnostics only, the tool aligns with the principle of least privilege, reducing the potential attack surface during troubleshooting. Microsoft has made the MCP Server open-source, allowing organizations to review, customize, and extend its functionality based on their needs. This approach encourages transparency, community collaboration, and greater trust among enterprise users.
The introduction of AI-assisted troubleshooting reflects a broader industry trend where machine learning enhances operational efficiency and reduces human error. For security and compliance teams, this capability enables faster issue resolution and more proactive management of data lifecycle policies As enterprise environments continue to grow in complexity, tools like the MCP Server will play an increasingly important role in maintaining visibility, ensuring compliance, and strengthening overall data governance strategies. Microsoft has also shared deployment guidance and additional details through its official Purview resources, helping organizations integrate the solution into existing workflows.
