The Kent District Library is revealing more information about a technology issue that closed all of their branches for multiple days.
Kent District Library (KDL) has confirmed that a previously reported “network outage” was in fact a ransomware attack that disrupted its systems and services across multiple branches. The incident, first announced on April 24, forced the library system to close most of its locations, significantly impacting day-to-day operations and access to services for patrons.
The organization stated that it is actively investigating the ransomware event with the support of third-party digital forensics and cybersecurity specialists. Efforts are currently focused on restoring affected systems and determining the full scope of the attack, including whether any sensitive data may have been compromised.
The disruption has led to limited reopening across select branches, with only a handful resuming operations under restricted conditions. KDL confirmed that four branches – Cascade Township, Kentwood/Richard L. Root, Plainfield Township, and Wyoming – have reopened with reduced hours from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. However, several services remain unavailable, including public computers, printers, copiers, and gaming labs.
Despite these limitations, patrons can still access essential services such as Wi-Fi, material checkouts, scheduled programs, and study rooms. To ease the inconvenience caused by the closures, KDL has adjusted due dates for borrowed materials and extended hold pickup timelines. The library has also encouraged users to return items via drive-up or walk-up drop boxes.
Importantly, KDL noted that its online third-party resources – including Libby, hoopla, and Kanopy – remain operational and accessible through its website, allowing patrons to continue using digital services during the outage.
Addressing concerns around data security, KDL emphasized that protecting user information remains a top priority. In an official statement, the organization said its investigation is ongoing and includes efforts to assess any potential impact on personal data. It added that affected individuals will be notified if any compromise of information is confirmed.
The ransomware attack highlights the growing threat landscape facing public institutions, where even community-focused services like libraries are becoming targets for cybercriminal activity. For KDL, the focus remains on recovery, transparency, and ensuring minimal disruption to the communities it serves while strengthening its cybersecurity posture moving forward.
