CYRIN has introduced a new hands-on cybersecurity lab focused on Buffer Overflow Attacks and Defenses. The lab provides students with practical experience in identifying, exploiting, and mitigating one of the most persistent vulnerabilities in software security.
A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it can hold. This excess data can spill into nearby memory locations, corrupting them and opening the door for attackers to inject and execute malicious code. Despite decades of awareness, buffer overflows remain a common and dangerous flaw.

Inside the Lab
The new training module allows students to explore how memory is structured in a running program and how attackers can exploit weaknesses in poorly written code. Participants will learn how to construct exploits capable of gaining root (superuser) access to a vulnerable system.
In addition to attack techniques, the lab emphasizes defensive strategies. Students are introduced to secure coding practices that help prevent buffer overflow vulnerabilities, as well as operating system safeguards designed to reduce the success rate of such exploits. Detection methods and monitoring approaches are also covered to provide a well-rounded defense perspective.

Who Can Participate
The program is designed for students with basic programming knowledge and familiarity with the Linux command line. CYRIN recommends these prerequisites to ensure participants can effectively navigate the exercises.
Commitment to Ongoing Training
CYRIN continues to expand its library of training modules, with a goal of adding at least one new lab or scenario each quarter. This steady rollout reflects the company’s commitment to delivering innovative, practical, and affordable training solutions for learners at all levels.
Accessible online, the CYRIN cyber range is designed to be flexible, cost-effective, and tailored to individual schedules—providing students with an entry point into the fast-moving world of cybersecurity.
