Bitdefender, a worldwide leader in cybersecurity, has announced the launch of They Wear Our Faces, a global awareness campaign aimed at educating consumers about the increasing sophistication of online scams. Timed to coincide with Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the initiative focuses on the risks posed by deepfake videos and voice cloning scams, which exploit trust and relationships across all age groups. Through informative content, practical guidance, and advanced security solutions, Bitdefender seeks to empower individuals and families to recognize and defend against modern cyber threats.

What were once obvious scams have now become highly convincing and emotionally manipulative. Deepfake videos and AI-generated voice imitations are evolving rapidly, making vigilance more critical than ever.

“The surge in AI-driven cybercrime has fundamentally changed the threat landscape,” said Mihaela Paun, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Bitdefender’s Consumer Solutions Group. “Scammers are now able to craft increasingly sophisticated and emotionally compelling attacks. Deepfake technology and voice cloning, in particular, have advanced to a stage where even the most cautious users can be deceived. By raising awareness, promoting simple protective measures, and utilizing trusted security tools, we can help families worldwide stay safe online.”

The scale of online scams and fraud is staggering. According to The Global State of Scams 2024 Report, worldwide losses due to scams and fraud have surpassed $1 trillion USD. A Bitdefender survey of 7,000 consumers revealed that text message-based scams were the most frequently encountered cyber incidents (45%), followed closely by fraud attempts (44%). With cybercriminals increasingly employing AI to craft precise, targeted campaigns, everyday users are at heightened risk.

AI-driven deepfake videos and voice cloning allow fraudsters to imitate the appearance and voice of real people with striking accuracy. Scammers are now impersonating trusted figures — from executives and public personalities to family members and friends — to convince victims to reveal sensitive data or transfer money. Unlike traditional phishing emails or fake websites, these personalized attacks exploit emotions such as fear, urgency, and trust, often bypassing conventional cybersecurity defenses.

The They Wear Our Faces campaign provides an array of tools and resources to help users defend against AI-driven scams. These include educational blogs, research studies, best-practice guides for detecting and avoiding online fraud, and access to Bitdefender’s cutting-edge anti-scam and cybersecurity technologies.
