The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has officially opened applications for an expanded workforce development partnership with Verizon, supported by a grant from the telecommunications leader. Through NJIT’s Learning and Development Initiative, the program aims to deliver no-cost, high-impact training in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and IT to eligible New Jersey residents. Scheduled to launch in early April, the initiative directly addresses the growing digital skills gap and prepares participants for in-demand technology careers.
As digital transformation accelerates across industries, the need for skilled professionals in AI, cybersecurity, and IT infrastructure continues to rise. Therefore, NJIT and Verizon are strengthening their collaboration to ensure residents gain access to career-focused education that aligns with evolving employer needs. By offering industry-recognized certifications and specialized credentials, the program creates a clear pathway into essential technology roles.

A major highlight of this expansion is the launch of a Cybersecurity Community of Practice. This collaborative ecosystem brings together participants, industry experts, and NJIT graduate students in a structured environment focused on peer-to-peer learning, mentorship, and professional networking. As a result, students become part of a professional community from day one, enhancing both their technical knowledge and career readiness.
“We are excited to partner with NJIT to provide this invaluable digital skills training opportunity,” said Donna Epps, Verizon’s Chief Responsible Business Officer. “As the digital landscape evolves, Verizon is reshaping its commitments to help individuals build their skillset in the workforce’s most sought after digital areas like AI and cyber security to turn career ambitions into reality.”
The curriculum is carefully designed to support workforce readiness in today’s modern economy. First, participants will receive preparation for CompTIA Tech+ and A+ certifications, equipping them with foundational technical skills required for IT and telecommunications roles. In addition, NJIT will provide an AI Literacy Microcredential, ensuring learners understand both the ethical considerations and practical applications of artificial intelligence an increasingly critical skill set for future job markets.

Furthermore, the Cybersecurity Community of Practice offers hands-on exposure through real-world case studies, networking opportunities, and continued professional development. This structure not only strengthens technical proficiency but also builds long-term career resilience.
To maximize accessibility, most training sessions will be delivered online. Moreover, qualifying participants may receive laptops and internet support to eliminate access barriers. Flexible scheduling options are also available, allowing individuals with work or family commitments to participate effectively.
“NJIT is New Jersey’s greatest producer of tech talent, and we are honored to collaborate with Verizon on a program that goes beyond traditional technical training,” said NJIT President Teik C. Lim. “By combining CompTIA A+ certification with our new AI Literacy microcredential and a robust Community of Practice, we are providing opportunities that match rapidly evolving technological needs of employers.”
Overall, this partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to strengthening New Jersey’s technology workforce. By integrating certification training, AI literacy, and community-based mentorship, NJIT and Verizon are equipping residents with the tools, confidence, and professional networks needed to succeed in today’s competitive digital economy.
