Kyndryl has officially launched a new advisory and managed services offering, Kyndryl Sovereignty Solutioning, as businesses increasingly prioritize control over their data, systems, and operational environments. Alongside this launch, the company has also introduced a Sovereignty Readiness Assessment, designed to help organizations better understand and manage their IT dependencies.
To begin with, this new solution aims to give enterprises greater visibility into how their systems operate and where their data resides. More importantly, it enables businesses to evaluate who can access critical systems and how those systems are governed. By combining consulting, implementation, and managed services, Kyndryl delivers a comprehensive approach to sovereignty challenges.
As organizations continue to navigate complex IT ecosystems, sovereignty concerns have expanded far beyond simple data residency issues. Today, companies must address broader challenges such as operational resilience, governance frameworks, and infrastructure control. Consequently, Kyndryl’s offering covers a wide range of domains, including cloud platforms, on-premises infrastructure, applications, and even artificial intelligence systems.
At the core of this initiative lies the Sovereignty Readiness Assessment. This assessment evaluates an organization’s current and future positioning across technical, operational, and data-related aspects. In addition, it identifies potential risks such as data exposure and operational dependencies. Following this, it provides a structured, phased roadmap that organizations can follow to enhance their sovereignty posture.
Unlike traditional assessments, this model is driven by decision-making rather than static scoring systems. Led by Kyndryl Consult, it empowers organizations to make informed choices as regulatory requirements and operational conditions evolve. As a result, businesses can adapt more effectively to changing environments.
Furthermore, Kyndryl’s broader service suite includes designing and building sovereignty-compliant architectures. These may involve hybrid infrastructures, dedicated systems, external encryption key management, and localized or on-premises environments for sensitive workloads. In parallel, the operational framework supports in-region IT delivery, customer-controlled access, and robust failover mechanisms to ensure business continuity.
Rising Importance of Sovereignty
Notably, Kyndryl has linked this launch to growing executive concern around sovereignty and data repatriation. According to its Readiness Report, 83% of business leaders believe these considerations have become more critical over the past year. This shift is largely driven by geopolitical uncertainties, increasing interdependencies in IT environments, and the need for uninterrupted operations.
At the same time, artificial intelligence is adding a new layer of complexity. Organizations must now evaluate how data moves during AI processes, how AI-driven systems are audited, and how resilience is maintained when AI becomes integral to business operations.
As companies rely more heavily on multiple cloud providers and third-party platforms across different regions, maintaining control becomes increasingly challenging. Therefore, businesses—especially those in regulated industries—must consider not only where their data is stored but also who manages it, where encryption keys are located, and how operations continue during disruptions.
Fariba Wells, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs and Policy at Kyndryl, emphasized the urgency of the issue:
“Sovereignty is no longer a theoretical or policy discussion. It’s an operational risk issue organisations need to address now,” said Fariba Wells, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs and Policy at Kyndryl.
“Through our Sovereignty Solutioning, we can help organisations decide how critical assets and dependencies are managed, so they can adapt quickly and maintain business continuity as conditions change,” Wells added.
Expanding Strategic Role
Moreover, Kyndryl designed this offering to support organizations operating across diverse environments, including on-premises systems, private clouds, hybrid infrastructures, and public cloud ecosystems. It also extends support to businesses working with hyperscale providers and regional technology partners.
Rather than acting as a one-time compliance check, the service focuses on continuous governance. This means organizations can regularly reassess their systems as regulations evolve and new technologies, including AI, are introduced.
Logan Wolfe, Partner, Global Enterprise Transformation, AI and Tech Strategy at Kyndryl, highlighted the strategic importance of sovereignty:
“In a world of increasing complexity and demands, sovereignty is a strategic enabler of growth for global businesses beyond a constraint or compliance requirement,” said Wolfe.
“Organisations that adopt Kyndryl’s sovereignty readiness assessment and solutioning into their operating model can unlock new capabilities, innovate with confidence and build deeper trust with customers.”
