Meta has paused its collaboration with Mercor following a major security breach that has sent shockwaves across the AI industry. The decision, described as indefinite, reflects growing concern over the potential exposure of highly sensitive training data used by leading AI labs. Further complicating the situation, a group claiming to be Lapsus$ has allegedly attempted to sell large volumes of Mercor-related data on underground forums. However, cybersecurity experts suggest this may be a false attribution, noting that many attackers reuse well-known group names to amplify credibility. Analysts, including those from Recorded Future, believe the activity is more consistent with TeamPCP’s tactics, which blend financial motivations with opportunistic targeting.

Beyond corporate implications, the fallout is also affecting Mercor’s contractor workforce. Projects tied to Meta have been halted, leaving many workers in uncertainty as the company reassesses its operations and security posture. Internally, some initiatives such as Meta’s Chordus project—are being reevaluated, underscoring how deeply integrated Mercor’s services are within AI development pipelines.

This incident underscores a growing reality in the AI era: data supply chains are becoming as critical—and as vulnerable—as the models themselves.
