Airoha Technology is making waves in the telecom world by becoming the first company to successfully commercialize fiber broadband platforms powered by the open-source prplOS ecosystem.

After more than three years of close collaboration with Tier-1 telecom operators, the company has turned a complex idea into a real-world solution. By 2025, two of its chipset platforms had already reached mass deployment—marking a major milestone not just for Airoha, but for the broader broadband industry.

What makes this achievement stand out is Airoha’s ability to support all three major open-source ecosystems OpenWrt, RDK-B, and prplOS. This gives telecom operators greater flexibility, allowing them to innovate faster and reduce dependency on closed systems.

Looking ahead, Airoha plans to expand its prplOS support even further in 2026 by adding four more fiber broadband platforms. This move is expected to open the door for a wider range of applications and services, helping operators deliver better user experiences.

Of course, getting here wasn’t easy. The company had to overcome strict technical challenges, including low-level API compliance, carrier-grade interoperability testing, and meeting tough EU cybersecurity regulations under the European Cyber Resilience Act. By tackling these hurdles, Airoha also managed to cut integration time significantly—from nearly two years down to just 6–9 months—helping operators save both time and cost.

Industry players like SoftAtHome have praised Airoha’s efforts, noting that such advancements could lower barriers to innovation and create a more dynamic broadband ecosystem.

With new 10G-PON and GPON platforms on the way, Airoha is not just improving performance—it’s reshaping how telecom ecosystems operate by separating hardware from software innovation. This “decoupling” approach is expected to drive faster service rollouts and greater competition in the global fiber broadband market.
