Mattermost has announced its sponsorship and active participation in Locked Shields, one of the world’s most advanced cyber defence exercises organized by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence. Locked Shields brings together cyber defence teams from allied and partner nations to simulate the protection of national infrastructure under real-time cyberattack conditions. The 2026 edition is expected to involve thousands of participants across NATO and partner countries, creating a high-pressure environment for testing operational readiness.

Through its sponsorship, Mattermost aims to support secure, self-hosted collaboration in mission-critical scenarios. Beyond financial backing, the company is playing an active role in shaping the exercise by developing Digital Forensics and Incident Response (DFIR) challenges for Blue Teams, as well as designing new Strategic Exercise (StratEX) scenarios for national-level decision-makers.

These contributions are designed to introduce real-world complexity into the exercise, enabling participants to test both technical response capabilities and strategic coordination under pressure. The initiative reflects the growing need for integrated collaboration tools that support distributed teams operating in constrained and high-stakes environments.

Daniel Schalla, Vice President of Security and Infrastructure at Mattermost, emphasized that cyber defence has evolved into an operational discipline that requires realistic training environments. He noted that Locked Shields provides a platform to simulate how modern defence organizations function across multiple layers of decision-making and response.

Tõnis Saar, Director of the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, highlighted the importance of industry collaboration in advancing cyber defence capabilities. He stated that Mattermost’s involvement enhances the realism of the exercise and helps refine incident response strategies in complex threat scenarios.

Mattermost’s platform is widely used by defence organizations, government agencies, and critical infrastructure operators, making its participation in Locked Shields a natural extension of its role in the global cybersecurity ecosystem. The company’s involvement underscores its commitment to strengthening collaborative defence capabilities and supporting the continuous evolution of cyber resilience strategies.
