IonQ has announced a multi-year expansion of its partnership with University of Maryland (UMD), strengthening their collaboration through the National Quantum Laboratory (QLab). This latest agreement, valued at $7.5 million, is supported by funding from the State of Maryland’s Capital of Quantum Initiative via the University of Maryland Economic Development Corporation (UMEC). Moreover, it builds on the strategic partnership first introduced in September 2024, signaling continued momentum in quantum innovation.

Through this expanded collaboration, both organizations aim to accelerate advancements in quantum computing, quantum networking, and workforce development. As demand for next-generation technologies increases, the partnership is expected to play a critical role in shaping the future of quantum research and commercialization.

“Our longstanding partnership with the University of Maryland meets the need to accelerate access to advanced quantum computing, quantum networking capabilities, and talent development,” said Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ. “IonQ’s collaboration with UMD reflects our commitment to Maryland’s ‘Capital of Quantum’ initiative, as we broaden QLab to include quantum networking, hardware upgrades, and deeper collaboration with its researchers.”

In addition, this agreement significantly enhances QLab’s capabilities as a premier testbed for cutting-edge quantum technologies. By deepening integration between IonQ and UMD researchers and students, the initiative provides hands-on opportunities to work with industry-leading quantum systems.

“This expanded agreement strengthens the QLab as a premier testbed for quantum networking and computing and deepens opportunities for our faculty and students to work hands-on with industry-leading systems,” said University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines. “Building on our strong relationship with IonQ through the QLab is critical to advancing discovery, developing talent and reinforcing Maryland’s position as the Capital of Quantum.”

Notably, the collaboration introduces advanced infrastructure, including the first deployment of IonQ’s silicon vacancy (SiV)-based quantum memory node. This development is expected to complement existing initiatives such as the Mid-Atlantic Region Quantum Internet (MARQI) network, thereby expanding research capabilities across multiple domains.

Furthermore, the expansion focuses on four core areas designed to scale innovation and research capacity. First, the deployment of a quantum memory node will enable advanced networking capabilities, allowing researchers to build and test new applications directly on IonQ’s platform. As a result, this will accelerate the path toward commercial quantum use cases.

Second, IonQ will increase compute access by providing additional quantum resources. Consequently, more researchers and students will be able to leverage quantum systems for experimentation and development.

Third, the partnership strengthens joint application development through targeted research projects. These include initiatives in quantum machine learning and holographic error-correcting codes, fostering closer collaboration between IonQ scientists and UMD faculty.

Finally, both organizations will work together on advanced experimental hardware upgrades. For instance, they plan to develop a specialized laser system to support more complex quantum algorithms and research in quantum thermodynamics.

At the same time, this collaboration reinforces Maryland’s growing reputation as a national hub for quantum innovation. By combining state investment, academic expertise, and commercial technology, the initiative creates a powerful ecosystem for advancing both fundamental and applied research.

Beyond research, the partnership also emphasizes workforce development. Students will gain hands-on experience with commercial-grade quantum systems and emerging networking architectures, preparing them for future roles in the rapidly evolving quantum industry.

Overall, this expanded agreement highlights IonQ’s broader commitment to advancing quantum technologies through strategic collaborations. By deepening its partnership with UMD, the company is not only accelerating innovation but also contributing to the development of a skilled workforce and a quantum ecosystem for the future.
