After years of waiting, WhatsApp is set to roll out a username feature that will allow people to connect and communicate without sharing their phone numbers. This means more privacy and better control over phone number visibility by choosing a unique username.
WhatsApp is rolling out a new username-based feature designed to enhance user privacy and reduce reliance on phone numbers for communication. The update, currently available to a limited group of users installing the latest version of the app, marks a significant shift in how people connect on the platform.
According to WABetaInfo, access to the feature is still restricted, with only a small number of users able to test it during the initial phase. The company plans to gradually expand availability over the coming months, closely monitoring performance and stability before a broader rollout.
The introduction of usernames allows users to initiate conversations without sharing their phone numbers, offering an added layer of privacy. However, WhatsApp has highlighted important considerations when selecting a username. Choosing the same username as on platforms like Instagram or Facebook could create a direct link between accounts, potentially exposing users’ identities across multiple platforms.
To address privacy concerns, WhatsApp is also introducing an optional “username key” feature. This adds an extra verification step for first-time interactions. In addition to entering a username, users will need to provide a four-digit code set by the account owner before initiating contact. This ensures that only individuals with both the username and code can start a conversation, giving users greater control over who can reach them.
The feature maintains WhatsApp’s core privacy promise, with all messages sent via usernames continuing to be protected by end-to-end encryption. Users will be able to search for contacts using usernames directly within the app, streamlining the process of connecting without exchanging personal contact details.
Once the feature becomes widely available, users can set up their usernames through the profile settings section. The process includes guided steps to create a unique identifier linked to the account.
WhatsApp has also established specific rules for username creation. Each username must contain at least one letter and can only include lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. It cannot begin with “www” or conclude with domain extensions like “.com,” and it must be between three and thirty-five characters long.
Additionally, usernames must be unique across Meta platforms. If a username is already in use on Instagram or Facebook, users may need to verify ownership through Meta’s Accounts Center to claim it on WhatsApp. If the username is already taken by another user on those platforms, it will not be available.
With this update, WhatsApp is taking a major step toward improving user privacy and control, aligning with broader industry trends focused on secure and flexible digital identity management.
