As ransomware attacks continue to evolve in sophistication, enterprises are increasingly struggling to secure their data across all layers of the IT environment. In response to this growing challenge, NetApp has partnered with Elastio to deliver a multi-layered defense system that enhances network resilience from production storage to recovery data.
Today, security teams must defend against threats that no longer follow traditional attack patterns. In fact, advanced ransomware can silently infiltrate production systems, evade detection mechanisms, and embed itself within snapshots and backups before triggering any alerts. Consequently, this makes it critical for organizations to secure not only live environments but also recovery data, which attackers increasingly target.
To address these risks, NetApp and Elastio are integrating advanced capabilities that extend protection across the entire data lifecycle. Specifically, the partnership embeds Elastio’s Provable Recovery Control technology directly into NetApp’s Ransomware Resilience Service. As a result, enterprises gain a unified solution that supports both ransomware detection and secure recovery using continuously verified, clean restore points.
“Ensuring adequate backup security and protection levels is crucial during infrastructure migration,” said Marc Crudgington, VP of IT Infrastructure and Chief Security Officer at Crane WW Logistics. “Elastio’s continuous audits of our backups from the outset have given us confidence in our recovery capabilities. This is a standard we consistently adhere to.”
Enhancing Ransomware Defense with Integrated Capabilities
Moreover, the integrated solution introduces deep file inspection for snapshots, allowing organizations to detect hidden threats that traditional tools may overlook. By combining NetApp’s storage-level security with Elastio’s recovery validation, the service ensures end-to-end resilience from early detection to safe restoration.
“Storage must be taken into account when developing a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy,” said Gagan Gulati, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Data Services at NetApp. “We protect data where it is and prioritize storage to combat cyber threats such as ransomware. However, the risks to enterprise resilience and operational continuity are too high to rely on a single layer of defense. Through our partnership with Elastio, we provide enterprises with another tool to protect their most critical asset: data.”
A New Layer of Protection in Ransomware Recovery
Furthermore, NetApp’s Ransomware Recovery Service plays a central role in this collaboration. It actively detects and blocks ransomware at the data layer, creates immutable snapshots, and guides organizations through the recovery process. At the same time, it continuously evaluates ransomware activity within the ONTAP® environment using Autonomous Ransomware Protection (ARP), enabling faster identification of suspicious behavior.
In parallel, Elastio enhances recovery assurance by performing deep inspections of ONTAP snapshots. This process identifies zero-day ransomware, pre-installed malware, and hidden data corruption that may bypass perimeter defenses. Additionally, it continuously pinpoints the last known clean restore points without requiring complex proxy deployments, simplifying recovery operations.
Importantly, the integration is designed for seamless adoption. Organizations can access these enhanced capabilities without additional purchases or architectural changes, making it easier to strengthen their cyber resilience strategies.
“Most organizations only discover their recovery data has been compromised at the worst possible moment, when the incident is already happening,” said Elastio CEO Naj Husain. “By then, the question of whether the backup data is intact is no longer a theoretical concern. This integrated solution will continue to address this issue and prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place.”
Driving Proactive Cyber Resilience
Ultimately, this partnership reflects a broader shift in cybersecurity from reactive defense to proactive resilience. By combining continuous verification, deep inspection, and automated recovery capabilities, NetApp and Elastio are enabling organizations to stay ahead of modern ransomware threats.
As enterprises continue to prioritize data protection, this integrated approach ensures that both production and recovery environments remain secure, helping businesses maintain operational continuity even in the face of increasingly advanced cyberattacks.
