Microsoft has released an out-of-band (OOB) update, KB5085516, for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2 to resolve a critical sign-in issue affecting Microsoft account users. The emergency update addresses a bug introduced in the March 2026 Patch Tuesday release that incorrectly displayed “no Internet” errors, preventing users from accessing essential Microsoft services despite having an active connection.

The issue originated from update KB5079473, released on March 10, 2026, which caused authentication failures across several Microsoft applications. Users reported being unable to sign in to services such as Microsoft Teams Free, OneDrive, Microsoft Edge, and Copilot, significantly disrupting daily workflows. The bug was limited to personal Microsoft accounts, while enterprise environments using Microsoft Entra ID remained unaffected.

KB5085516 is a cumulative update, incorporating all prior improvements from the March Patch Tuesday release, along with a targeted fix for the connectivity misdetection issue. Microsoft confirmed that the update resolves the incorrect “no Internet” status that was interfering with authentication processes across its ecosystem of applications.

In addition to fixing the sign-in issue, the update introduces enhancements to several AI-driven components within Windows 11. Features such as Image Search, Content Extraction, and Semantic Analysis have been updated to version 1.2602.1451.0, reflecting Microsoft’s continued investment in AI-powered system capabilities. The release also includes servicing stack update KB5083532, which improves the reliability and performance of the Windows update infrastructure.

Microsoft is deploying the update automatically through Windows Update for devices that previously installed KB5079473. Users who have enabled automatic updates will receive the patch without manual action, while others can install it by navigating to the Windows Update settings and selecting the download option. For enterprise and managed environments, the update is also available through the Microsoft Update Catalog and can be deployed using tools such as Microsoft Intune and Windows Autopatch.

Out-of-band updates are relatively rare and typically indicate a high-priority issue requiring immediate resolution outside the standard update cycle. In this case, the widespread impact on widely used applications made rapid intervention necessary.

Microsoft has reported no known issues associated with KB5085516 at the time of release. Users are strongly advised to install the update promptly to restore full functionality of Microsoft account-based services and ensure a seamless user experience across Windows 11 platforms.
