As geopolitical tensions, regional conflicts, and cyber threats continue to intensify worldwide, organizations are facing unprecedented challenges in protecting their operations, data, and people. In response to this rapidly shifting environment, global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP has announced the launch of a dedicated National Security Group, headquartered in Washington, D.C. The new group brings together more than 30 experienced lawyers across the firm’s global platform, creating a multidisciplinary team designed to help clients anticipate, manage, and respond to complex national security risks.
To accelerate the group’s formation, Greenberg Traurig has welcomed a distinguished team of national security lawyers joining from Eversheds Sutherland and key roles within the U.S. government. These professionals will integrate closely with the firm’s established strengths in Data Privacy & Cybersecurity, Export Controls & Economic Sanctions, Government Contracts, International Trade, Technology, Media & Telecommunications, and White Collar Defense & Investigations. Together, these capabilities position the firm to deliver comprehensive legal solutions across the full national security spectrum.

Leading the new group is E. Patrick Gilman, who now serves as chair of the National Security Group. Gilman previously served as a highly decorated Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army and as global co-head of national security investigations at Eversheds. He is joined by Neal Higgins, a former member of the CIA’s Senior Intelligence Service and the first Deputy National Cyber Director for National Cybersecurity, and Joshua W. Johnson, former Deputy General Counsel at U.S. Cyber Command and Senior Counsel to the Cyber National Mission Force’s AI Task Force and Public-Private Collaboration Center. Collectively, the team brings decades of frontline experience from institutions such as the Department of Defense, Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, Treasury, State Department, CIA, NSA, U.S. Cyber Command, Congress, and the White House.
By combining government-level insight with private-sector execution, the National Security Group aims to guide clients through sensitive, high-stakes matters involving national security regulations, investigations, and cross-border risk. The group advises corporations, financial institutions, government entities, and individuals on proactive compliance planning as well as crisis response, helping them operate confidently in an environment where regulatory scrutiny continues to expand.
“As clients navigate an increasingly globalized and complex world, they need a law firm that can not only provide expert advice in key areas, but offer holistic legal solutions to questions that don’t always have clear-cut answers,” said Ernest LaMont Greer, co-president of Greenberg Traurig and chair of the Washington, D.C., office. “When dealing with issues of national security, it is more important than ever to have a platform like Greenberg Traurig at your back to help dissect the issue and provide a comprehensive plan of action. We welcome Patrick, Neal, Joshua, and their entire team.”

“Greenberg Traurig’s reputation as one of the largest law firms in the world that maintains its nimbleness and ability to grow reflects a culture of innovation and determination that attracted our team,” said Gilman. “What sealed our decision was the firm’s commitment to collaboration and teamwork. The firm offers unparalleled global reach with integrated capabilities spanning legislative, regulatory, and legal services. We’re excited to join Greenberg Traurig’s incredible lawyers and professionals globally who have deep knowledge of all aspects of national security law, from trade controls and CFIUS to government contracting, creating a truly integrated approach for our clients.”
