N-able, Inc., a global provider of unified cyber resiliency software, has unveiled Cat-MIP, a first-of-its-kind framework designed to standardize terminology for AI automation and MCP Server operations across managed service providers (MSPs) and IT environments. The initiative aims to eliminate fragmented language, enabling IT teams to achieve greater accuracy, reliability, and security when deploying AI-driven automation.
One of the biggest challenges in AI-powered IT management is inconsistent terminology across tools and platforms. Cat-MIP directly addresses this issue by offering a vendor-neutral dictionary that allows AI systems to interpret and act on instructions precisely. The Cat-MIP Standards Board—comprising HaloPSA, Auvik Networks, SecurityBiaS, and ScalePad—is leading the effort to establish shared definitions and synonym mapping across the ecosystem.

For example, when an AI agent receives a command like “restart all my devices,” Cat-MIP minimizes ambiguity, ensuring the request is executed consistently across multiple vendor environments. This lightweight, interoperable framework provides the foundation for smarter, safer, and more reliable AI interactions.
“Defining terminology is the first building block of any standards initiative, much like understanding your assets before performing a risk assessment,” said Kathleen Moriarty, CEO of SecurityBiaS. “This step creates a trusted foundation for securing and managing AI exchanges across vendors, which is critical for interoperability.”
Key Benefits of Cat-MIP:
Improved cybersecurity and reliability: Reduces errors caused by misinterpreted commands, ensuring mission-critical IT functions execute properly.

Seamless ecosystem collaboration: Enables interoperability across vendors, giving IT providers the freedom to choose the best solutions without vendor lock-in.
Accelerated innovation: By fostering community-driven standards, Cat-MIP promotes open collaboration and strengthens business resilience across the IT landscape.
“Cat-MIP is the semantic backbone of the N-able Ecoverse, providing a common language that makes collaboration intelligent, secure, and scalable,” said Nicole Reineke, Senior Distinguished Product Manager at N-able. “When AI misinterprets commands, it can lead to costly—or even dangerous—outcomes. Cat-MIP ensures precision, trust, and confidence in AI actions, making efficiency and resilience a business necessity rather than an option.”
Roop Petersen, Director of Engineering at Auvik Networks, added:
“As AI continues to shape IT operations, frameworks like Cat-MIP will be vital. Standardizing MCP terminology across vendors reduces confusion and strengthens the foundation for interoperability, driving more consistent and reliable results across the ecosystem.”
With Cat-MIP, N-able and its partners are setting a new industry standard, positioning AI as a more accurate, secure, and trusted tool for IT management and cybersecurity resilience.
